A massive security operation will see 7,000 police and gendarmes and 2,000 firefighters deployed across Paris and its suburbs on Tuesday to safeguard 14 July festivities and deter disorder around the France v Spain World Cup semi-final.
According to Le Progres, the Paris police prefecture set out that on Monday 3,000 police from the prefecture, reinforced by 1,000 mobile unit officers and 2,000 Paris fire brigade personnel, would secure the classical concert on the Champ de Mars and the evening fireworks and drone show.
The concert is going ahead despite high temperatures, but its start is delayed by 45 minutes to 21:45 to limit crowds’ exposure to heat. Pyrotechnics are due from 23:00. Public access now begins at 20:00 instead of 16:00.
Tuesday’s operation will also cover the 14 July military parade on the Champs-Elysées, the last for Emmanuel Macron as head of state. Authorities aim to ensure the semi-final remains a celebration for as many people as possible.
Nationwide, about 70,000 police and gendarmes will be deployed.
