Pat Nevin says Liverpool signing gives them chance of “domination” | OneFootball

Liverpool’s perfect start to the Premier League season has put us top of the table, but not everyone is fully convinced by what they’ve seen so far.

Former Scotland international Pat Nevin has been looking at the title race and believes our British record signing Alexander Isak could prove to be the difference as we aim to retain our crown.

Nevin, writing for BBC Sport, said: “Only Liverpool have full points but they have been far from totally convincing, though the signing of Alexander Isak will help their chances of domination.”

Signing the Swede was a real coup, though his recent comments on his own fitness mean we may have to be patient before seeing him making a decisive impact for the Reds.

The ex-Chelsea winger also assessed how the rest of the so-called big four are shaping up, with Arsenal’s tendency to lose key players to injury and Chelsea’s lack of a proper summer break both highlighted as potential stumbling blocks.

Manchester City’s transition was also raised, with Pep Guardiola’s side not yet clicking as quickly as many expected.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s superb free-kick gave us the edge in our first top-of-the-table clash this season and we’ll need to see more big wins if we want to secure silverware in May.

Liverpool have already signed Florian Wirtz and Isak this summer, breaking spending records in the process, yet Nevin suggested that the gap between the top four and the chasing pack may not be as wide as first predicted.

Isak, who joined from Newcastle United in a £125m deal, scored 27 goals last season and has been backed to lead the line as our new No.9.

Nevin wrote: “The big four might have raided the smaller teams and taken their best players, but they have also funded those clubs handsomely and allowed them to keep their nimbler acquisition policies going strong.”

Liverpool’s business has included not just Isak and Wirtz, there’s been much more incoming and outgoing activity than we’ve been accustomed to in recent seasons.

For supporters, the message is clear: while pundits such as Nevin believe our rivals will provide challenges, the task at hand is for the lads to show that this squad is built to compete on all fronts.
