Pathé Mboup produced a superb strike at Auxerre but Brest slipped to a 1-2 Ligue 1 defeat on Sunday. The 22-year-old opened the scoring with a brilliant piece of control and finish.

Before that, Brest’s left winger looked set for another wasteful outing. He shot at the keeper after a high press despite team-mates free, then, two minutes later, missed the target.

He kept running in behind and was rewarded from a Joris Chotard free-kick, Brest’s usual set-piece specialist. Stealing in front of Axel Tuanzebe, Mboup cushioned on his right thigh and, in one motion, swept in. Arms outstretched at the corner flag, he was quickly mobbed by Doumbia, Versini and Chotard.

Coach Julien Lachuer said Mboup had rushed a similar chance against PSG, but called this the perfect execution. He added he was pleased for the player and, if it can unlock him and build confidence, all the better.

“We work a lot in front of goal in training and in matches we have to reproduce the same. In recent games I tried many shots like that without success. Today it went for me, so we must persevere,” he told Ligue 1+. It was his first since 23 November, against Metz (3-2), ending a run of 22 matches and 27 shots without a goal.
