Patrick Vieira has named the hardest player he faced while playing for Arsenal as one of their main players during the Premier League era.
The Frenchman played a key role for Arsene Wenger’s side, which dominated the English game across several seasons, and was on their books between 1996 and 2005, winning three Premier League titles among several other honours.
The former midfielder enjoyed a superb career in England and, in many matches, was the dominant midfield player. However, he faced several opponents who challenged him in different games.
Vieira went on to become one of the best midfielders in the game during his spell at Arsenal and gave the best years of his career to the Gunners before eventually leaving the club.
There were opponents who always gave him a tough time in matches, and the most notable of them all was Roy Keane. It is therefore no surprise that Vieira picked the Manchester United icon as his toughest opponent in club football.
Vieira’s battles with Keane became a notable feature of the Premier League during that era, with both midfielders playing important roles for their respective clubs. Their competitive encounters highlighted the intensity of English football at the time.
Vieira also identified another difficult opponent when discussing his international career. While Keane was the player who stood out most from his time in club football, Edgar Davids presented a different challenge when Vieira represented France.

Vieira explained that Davids was particularly difficult to play against during their meetings at international level. The former Arsenal midfielder recalled facing the Dutchman when France played Holland, highlighting the quality of the opponents he encountered throughout his career.
He tells Give Me Sport:
“In England, I would say Roy Keane, of course, because I believe that he is one of the best. [At] international level, Edgar Davids was tough to play against. When we played a couple of games against each other for France and Holland, he was a tough one to play against as well.”
Vieira’s comments underline the quality of the midfield battles he experienced during his career. Keane was his standout opponent in England, while Davids earned similar recognition for his performances against him at international level.
