Liverpool are once again in the middle of a contract standoff, this time with French centre-back Ibrahima Konate. As reported by Paul Joyce in The Times, “Konate’s future remains uncertain.
“The France defender has entered the final year of his own deal and long-standing attempts to persuade him to sign a new contract remain at an impasse.”
The 26-year-old, who arrived from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £36 million, has been a dependable partner to Virgil van Dijk. He has also become a popular figure among supporters thanks to his pace, physicality and composure on the ball. However, with negotiations failing to progress, questions are now being asked about how Liverpool plan to secure defensive stability for the seasons ahead.
According to Joyce, Real Madrid are among those watching closely. With Konate entering the final months of his current deal, Los Blancos sense an opportunity. The Spanish giants value the Frenchman’s physical attributes and his ability to cope with elite-level opposition.
Liverpool’s message, however, remains consistent. They are keen to retain him, but they will not chase or compromise if his ambitions lie elsewhere. Konate’s jokes about a potential move, mentioned in Joyce’s report, have done little to reassure supporters or management.

This uncertainty coincides with Liverpool’s recent defensive reinforcement. Giovanni Leoni, an 18-year-old Italian defender from Parma, was signed in the summer for £26 million. Though seen as a long-term project, his arrival highlights the club’s intent to future-proof the backline.
Alongside Joe Gomez and a crop of promising academy talents, Liverpool believe they have the depth required to adapt, should Konate decide against renewing. Still, losing an established player of his calibre would be a significant blow, particularly with the club back at the summit of English football under Arne Slot.
Joyce concluded that, “The message is simple: if Konate wishes to commit his long-term future, he remains central to Arne Slot’s plans. If not, Liverpool are prepared to move forward without him.”
This firm stance reflects a new approach at Anfield. Having seen star players depart in the past, Liverpool’s hierarchy are determined not to be held to ransom. Whether Konate signs or leaves, the club want clarity sooner rather than later.
With Real Madrid circling and just months left before pre-contract discussions become possible, this has all the makings of one of 2026’s defining transfer stories.
For many Liverpool fans, this report will set alarm bells ringing. Losing Ibrahima Konate at a time when the team has rediscovered its dominance under Arne Slot feels like a risk that could derail momentum. Slot’s debut season ended in a Premier League title, and this current campaign has already started perfectly with wins over Bournemouth, Newcastle United and Arsenal. That momentum needs to be protected, not disrupted.
The idea of Real Madrid circling is also troubling. They have already taken Trent Alexander-Arnold and the thought of another cornerstone of Liverpool’s spine heading to Spain is unsettling. While Giovanni Leoni looks an exciting prospect, supporters know the difference between potential and proven quality. Konate has shown he can handle the intensity of the Premier League and Champions League nights at Anfield, something no teenager can be expected to replicate immediately.
There is also concern about squad depth. Virgil van Dijk is approaching the twilight of his career, Joe Gomez has struggled with consistency and injuries, and while young players are promising, they remain untested. Konate leaving could leave the defence exposed at a crucial time in Liverpool’s evolution.
For supporters, the solution feels straightforward. Pay what is required to keep him and send a message that Liverpool retain their best when competing at the top. Anything less will invite turbulence into what has so far been a season of renewed confidence.
