Paul Pogba (33) could leave just one season into his two-year deal at AS Monaco, the Principality club’s CEO, Thiago Scuro, has announced.

Pogba joined last summer, following the expiry of his ban for doping. It was difficult to imagine him hitting the heights of yesteryear, however, with just six appearances, one start, and 115 minutes accumulated, La Pioche fell below expectations. Naturally, his performances were not enough to get him back into the France set-up, as he had hoped.

Pogba’s future in Filipe Luís’ hands

With the club looking to decrease their wage bill, Pogba could now be one of the players to depart. Asked about the Frenchman’s future by Get French Football News, Scuro responded, “It is a complicated topic because we have a lot of respect for Paul, for the person he is. Since he arrived, he has been very positive. It is also true that, last year, the project didn’t work well because when we started with him in the summer, the expectations were very different to what happened. I think that we have to be fair with him, follow his preparation every week, how he will progress physically and technically and then it will be the manager’s decision.”

The announcement comes as Monaco unveiled Filipe Luís as their new manager. Without being drawn on the topic of Pogba, the new manager said that he was a “special player” with whom he will speak in the coming days, as he will with the rest of the squad.

Scuro continued, “We have the summer to see what level we will see from Pogba […] He could [leave at the end of the summer]. With Paul, it has always been a very open and transparent relationship. If, at some point, the expectations of the player are different to the expectations of the club, we will have to speak to find a solution. The performance will give all the answers that we need. Maybe he will stay, maybe he will leave.”
