Paul Scholes suggests a NEW England position for Trent Alexander-Arnold - and it's not midfield

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has started the season in great form, helping his club and country to keep clean sheets in all five matches he has played and providing an assist for Harry Kane in England’s 2-0 win over Finland.

This impressive form was recognised when Trent was presented with back-to-back Player of the Match awards whilst on duty for the Three Lions in the recent international break.

Although the Reds ace had a mixed Euros campaign with his country, where he was deployed as a midfielder and dropped from the starting XI after the opening two group games, he now seems to be making England’s right-back spot his own.

England's interim manager Lee Carsley appears to be committed to playing Trent in his natural position and has reaped the rewards in his first two matches in charge of the national team.

Should Trent have played at left-back?

Although Gareth Southgate’s experiment with using Alexander-Arnold in the midfield wasn’t a success at the Euros, former Manchester United and England icon Paul Scholes believes the England boss should have tried Trent in a different position.

Speaking on The Overlap’s 'Stick to Football' podcast, Scholes said: “I thought Trent this summer should have played at left-back, because [England] didn’t have a left footer but he’s the one who can get there and he can play his passes from there, he’ll get on the ball all day.”

This suggestion by Scholes wasn’t met with much love by fellow ex-pros Jamie Carragher, Ian Wright, Roy Keane and Gary Neville but all of the panel seemed to agree that Trent’s time in the midfield was not a success.

In an attempt to explain why it hadn’t worked out for Trent in the midfield, Scholes said: “It’s alright being right-back and being on the ball, where you get plenty of time, but then all of a sudden you’ve got to find a bit of space in midfield and it’s not easy.”

Trent’s England career

Although Trent has over 30 England caps, he has rarely been used in his natural position at right-back and hasn’t shown the same elite level of performance that he so regularly does at Liverpool.

For many England fans it was puzzling how Southgate failed to get the most out of a player who had been one of the best in the world in his position for a number of years.

In the same episode of 'Stick to Football', Neville reminded us of his previous claim, “It is illegal that Trent Alexander-Arnold is not playing for England,” and this sentiment is shared by supporters of both Liverpool and the Three Lions.

Although Trent’s England future probably doesn’t lie in the midfield, it also isn’t where Scholes bizarrely suggested it should be - at left-back, where he hasn’t played a single senior game.

England have moved onto a new era now that Southgate is no longer manager and all signs currently point to Alexander-Arnold being the nailed-on starting right-back for the foreseeable future.
