Pavon gains prominence at Grêmio after return to natural role | OneFootball

Pavon is enjoying a resurgence at Grêmio after returning to his natural role, scoring the winners in the last two victories, both from free-kicks, following the arrival of right-back Diego Caito.

According to Globo.com, he had been covering at right-back since February’s league meeting with São Paulo, becoming Luís Castro’s first choice despite options João Pedro and Marcos Rocha.

His final outing there came against Fluminense on 26 July, when Caito debuted and grabbed the equaliser. Pavon was an unused substitute against Mirassol in the Copa do Brasil last-16 first leg.

In the return against the Paulistas, with Tetê injured, he started up front and bent in the free-kick that secured qualification. Last Saturday against São Paulo he played 90 minutes in attack and again scored from a set-piece.

Castro praised him as a team-first presence, citing constant positive energy and leadership even during pressure moments.

Between attacking and full-back stints he endured one year and three months without a goal, a run of 65 games, before ending the drought against Palestino in May in the Sul-Americana.

Since February 2024 he has 116 appearances, 11 goals and 21 assists for Grêmio. Goalkeeper Weverton lauded his resilience and consistency. Pavon should keep his place until Tetê recovers from a hip muscle oedema, with Atlético-MG away on Sunday in the Brasileirão’s 23rd round.
