Portugal international has flourished in new role under Xabi Alonso

Pedro Neto has signed a new long-term contract at Chelsea that will keep him at the club until 2032.

The Portuguese had been the subject of transfer interest during the summer window, with Standard Sport previously reporting that Manchester City and Tottenham were interested in the winger, but ultimately, he stayed put at Stamford Bridge.

The former Wolves man has become a first-team regular under new manager Xabi Alonso, operating in an unfamiliar right wing-back role, where he has flourished.

The 26-year-old has now committed his future to the club, penning a new six-year deal to keep him in west London for the long haul.

He has made 108 appearances for the Blues, with 40 goal contributions in that time.

“It’s an unbelievable moment”’ Neto told the official club website.

“From when I arrived, I have always felt like the people here helped me a lot. I feel like home here, I feel like I want to achieve more things here.

Neto first started as a wing-back against Brighton and Hove Albion, where the Blues won 4-3, and he was fielded there once more in the 2-1 defeat at Arsenal last weekend.

He was positioned there again after Alonso’s wholesale changes against Leeds in midweek, responding at half time with four substitutions and a formation change that saw a 4-3-3 shape altered to his familiar 3-4-2-1.

Neto operated as a wing-back, with matchwinners Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer wreaking havoc as the free-roaming No10s behind Danny Welbeck, who led the line.
