Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, has left the door open for Cristiano Ronaldo to rejoin the national team after the forward departed last Wednesday’s camp without permission.

Portugal beat Norway 2-1 on Sunday to make it four wins from four during a turbulent international break for the 41-year-old Al-Nassr striker. According to L'Équipe, Proença suggested the five-time Ballon d'Or winner could still feature for the side.

Ronaldo’s exit followed tensions with head coach Jorge Jesus. Proença described him as the greatest player in history, said his place is deserved because of his exceptional sporting qualities, and added he will remain part of the group whenever he is fit and ready.

He characterised the dispute with Jesus as a simple misunderstanding to be handled internally. Proença said Ronaldo could have ended his international career at the World Cup but did not, citing his love for the national team, and spoke of the bond he shares with the Portuguese public. He also called Ronaldo part of the country’s heritage and available whenever the coach wants him.

After the win over Norway, Jesus said a return would be possible if Ronaldo wished, adding they can discuss it before the next call-up and that the decision rests with the player.
