Peio Canales not returning now as Athletic let recall deadline pass | OneFootball

Athletic have allowed the deadline to recall Peio Canales to lapse, so the 20-year-old will complete the season on loan at Racing.

According to El Correo, the club opted against activating the clause, despite midfield shortages and November guidance from Racing sporting director Chema Aragón that only a small compensation was required.

Canales has delivered three goals and five assists for the Segunda leaders, operating mainly as an attacking midfielder and at times in central midfield. His form had fuelled talk of a January return.

Aragón said on Wednesday that the option expired on Tuesday 20 January, speaking at a press conference. He added he was now happy and more relaxed with the player’s continuity through to the end of the season.

Aragón has shown an eye for young talent, notably handing a Segunda debut to Manex Lozano, a youth loanee from Athletic who had not played a minute in Primera RFEF for their B side.
