AZ built pressure after the restart and levelled in the second minute of second half stoppage time when Troy Parrott struck from range after a pass by Mees de Wit. Four minutes later, Alexandre Penetra met Kasper Boogaard's cross with a close-range header to complete the comeback (90.+6).

Stijn van Gassel made five saves for Excelsior as AZ registered 16 attempts, with seven on target. Excelsior produced 11 attempts and forced seven corners.

Leeroy Echteld turned to his bench at the break, introducing Elijah Dijkstra, Isak Jensen and Ibrahim Sadiq, with Sven Mijnans and Mexx Meerdink added later as the visitors pushed on. Parrott is now on 12 league goals, second in the Eredivisie scoring chart.

The fourth official indicated five minutes of added time before the late drama unfolded.

Next, Excelsior visit Fortuna Sittard in the league. AZ travel to Noah in the UEFA Conference League.
