Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has predicted great things for the club in the seasons to come after a 2-1 comeback win over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Dominic Szoboszlai’s stunning free-kick from distance seemed to have secured all three points for the reigning Premier League champions but late goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland helped Manchester City record a monumental triumph in Merseyside.

City have completed the Premier League double over Liverpool for the first time in 89 years, sending a strong message to title rivals and league leaders Arsenal that it is not over until it is truly over when the Blues are in the thick of a title race.

The jury remains out on whether the Blues can sustain their charge for silverware on multiple fronts as the season progresses, though the last week has seen them enter the Carabao Cup final – where they will play Arsenal at Wembley in March – and begin to turn the ship around in the Premier League.

Guardiola will know too well that the confidence boost a result at Anfield will give his new-look dressing room is worth its weight in gold, with City letting Arsenal and Mikel Arteta know they’re in it to win it.

The Manchester City manager has faced questions on his future of late, with reliable quarters of the English media relaying a growing belief in Premier League circles that Guardiola could leave at the end of the season – a year before his current deal is due to expire in 2027.

Sources close to Guardiola’s camp have responded to speculation over the 55-year-old’s future, clarifying that noise around his future has come as a result of chatter fuelled by executives from rival clubs and agents – with no firm decision made on whether the Catalan will see out the final year of his contract as of yet.

City remain at a nascent stage of their rebuild under director of Hugo Viana, who has made sweeping changes to Guardiola’s ranks since he replaced long-serving executive Hugo Viana last summer, adding Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi to the roster in January as the Blues vie for silverware on four fronts.

Speaking about the club’s prospects of success in the seasons to come after Sunday’s comeback win at Anfield, Guardiola said: “The brightness (the future) of this club, these players, is good. It’s bright because it’s bought really, really good players, with big, big personalities,” in his post-match press conference.

“And Marc (Guehi) will become top. He is already, I would say! And (Abdukodir) Khusanov. His first time in Anfield. Coming from Uzbekistan, six months in France, coming here, first time here, against (Hugo) Ekitike, (Mohamed) Salah – what a game he played, that guy!

“A bright future, the club has a bright, bright future! Txiki (Begiristain), Hugo (Viana) alongside Ferran (Soriano) made good signings, really, really good ones. With time, when everyone will be settled, the team will continue to be there.”

Guardiola is expected to make a firm decision on honouring the final year of his contract towards the end of the season but should he call it a day this summer, the Catalan would want to leave on a high and no better way to leave in style than reclaim the Premier League title from Liverpool and usurp Arsenal once more.
