Pep Guardiola is reportedly set for a dramatic return to the Etihad, aiming to stand with Manchester City during the club’s most turbulent spell after a guilty verdict on Premier League financial breaches.

The Mirror reports that he intends to be in the stands when City host Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on October 14, having left at the end of last season with Enzo Maresca now in charge.

An independent commission found City guilty of all charges relating to breaches of Premier League financial regulations between 2009 and 2018. Guardiola’s 20-trophy decade now faces fresh scrutiny, and the club deny wrongdoing and have lodged an appeal.

Throughout his tenure Guardiola publicly defended the hierarchy, maintaining that executives had assured him no rules were broken. After the ruling he used social media to restate his loyalty to the owner, chairman, Ferran Soriano, players, staff, Maresca and supporters.

Maresca must manage the storm while preparing for PSG, and any appearance by Guardiola could galvanise a shaken fanbase and dressing room. With the legal process ongoing, City’s immediate task is to respond on the pitch.
