Footage in the Amazon Prime Video documentary A Beautiful Obsession shows Pep Guardiola in tears during a confrontation with Kyle Walker at Anfield after a 2-0 defeat in December 2024. It preceded a sharp fall in Walker’s minutes and, later, his departure.
That result began a seven-match winless run, with six defeats, for the champions. Guardiola had only recently extended his contract, adding to the febrile mood.
Walker challenged what he felt was unfair treatment in meetings, arguing his name was repeatedly singled out despite his leadership role. Guardiola replied that captains are referenced more often. Walker disputed that and said he had not been the manager’s choice as captain, adding he was being scapegoated for wider tactical errors.
During the exchange, Guardiola became emotional and told the room to say so if he was the problem. He said he had not extended for money, but to be with them and fight, insisted his affection for the players would not change, and apologised.
Walker’s minutes fell sharply. He played only seven more games before seeking a move abroad, joining AC Milan on loan in January 2025.
He left permanently in summer 2025 for Burnley after more than 300 City appearances across seven decorated years. Guardiola departed in summer 2026, a year early, with the announcement following a draw with Bournemouth that effectively conceded the title race.
