Leeds United director Peter Lowy says it is now or never for regenerating the Elland Road area, with the club seeking government support to lift capacity from 37,645 to roughly 53,000. According to Leeds Live, the Australian businessman views the project as a once-in-a-generation opportunity.
Lowy cautioned that delay could see the chance disappear, adding that investors will not wait for 10 years when they can put capital elsewhere.
The club is understood to have thousands on a season-ticket waiting list. More than £10 million has been spent on planning work in the past year, and project leads estimate around £30 million in annual gross value for the city if the scheme proceeds.
Planning permission for expansion was granted in January, and Lowy argues the surrounding district must be upgraded alongside the stadium. He said the venue and club need efficient access so supporters can arrive easily and spend time on site.
BBC Radio Leeds reported earlier this year that Lowy had spoken with Chancellor Rachel Reeves about funding a proposed light rail link from Leeds station to White Rose, with a stop at Elland Road.
The Express reports that Leeds is widely regarded as the largest city in western Europe without any light rail, whether tram, metro or underground.
Lowy said between £10 and £20 million has already been allocated to stadium improvements, urging political leaders to act. He accepted the work will take years but noted it is 2026 and long timelines are expected.
