Phil Parkinson says Wrexham are holding talks with several potential signings as January enters its final stretch, amid links to a £19m move for Angers striker Sidiki Cherif, with Crystal Palace also in the frame.
According to Wales Online, Wrexham are exploring a club-record package worth £19m for the 19-year-old, including £12m up front and sizeable promotion-linked add-ons.
Speaking on Thursday, Parkinson declined to discuss specific names when asked about Cherif. He said the club are linked with many players, some credible and others not, and that enquiries and talks may or may not lead to deals. He added that incomings would require departures and his focus remains on the current squad.
Parkinson said Wrexham are always scanning for options to help now and longer term, and could act if the right player becomes available at the right price, although signings are not an absolute necessity this month.
If agreed, such a deal would shatter Wrexham’s previous record of £10m for Nathan Broadhead last summer and also eclipse the Championship mark of £17.5m set by Ipswich for Sindre Walle Egeli in August.
Cherif has four goals in 18 Ligue 1 appearances in a breakthrough campaign. Palace are believed to have been closing in on the forward, so Wrexham beating Premier League competition would be a major surprise. The Red Dragons sit ninth in the Championship, two points off the play-offs in their first season at this level for 43 years.
