Sunderland returned to Premier League action at the Stadium of Light but were beaten 3-1 by Marco Silva’s Fulham. Missed chances after the break proved costly as the visitors struck twice from set plays, then finished it on a late counter.

According to Sunderland Echo, goalkeeper Robin Roefs was rated six, with little he could do about the goals and some tidy distribution that created openings. Raul Jimenez’s penalty was well taken.

Nordi Mukiele suffered an early injury and, after trying to play on, had to be withdrawn when he went down again. He was not graded and his fitness is a significant concern in a busy few weeks.

Dan Ballard earned seven and was Sunderland’s standout performer. He largely contained Jimenez, passed forward with intent and threatened at set pieces, winning a penalty that gave the hosts hope.

Omar Alderete received six. He lost possession a couple of times before the interval without damage, otherwise steady on a day when Sunderland were punished ruthlessly after half-time.
