Philippe Montanier will not manage ASSE next season, with his deal expiring on 30 June after he was unable to take the Verts back to Ligue 1.
Le Progres reports that he told the hierarchy the conditions were not right for a renewal, citing an unsuitable split of sporting responsibilities, and that he wants to coach at a higher level, not in Ligue 2.
Appointed on the first of February 2026 to succeed Eirik Horneland, the former goalkeeper had previously ended his playing career at Saint-Etienne in 2000. He joined while out of work after leaving Toulouse in 2023, returning from a round-the-world trip. Promotion hopes had been slipping under Horneland after a run of poor results.
Montanier’s early impact restored the top two places with a strong sequence, but the campaign faded and ASSE ultimately fell short in the play-offs.
ASSE are now seeking a new head coach, who should be named by the end of next week at the latest.
This week Canadian owner Larry Tanenbaum published an open letter to the ASSE community, asking for patience and stressing his long-term commitment.
