Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang faces a spell out, the Deportivo La Corogne striker set to have right knee surgery after a prolific start to the season.

The club said in a statement on Wednesday that he will undergo an operation on Thursday 24 September at the Olympia Centre in Madrid, performed by orthopaedic surgeon Manuel Leyes, to address discomfort in the lateral meniscus of his right knee suffered during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Real Betis. It added that his progress will dictate a return to group training, with no specific date given. He is due to be discharged on Thursday.

Aubameyang has scored five goals in seven La Liga matches this term, underpinning La Corogne’s promising start.

He arrived from Marseille in the summer and has quickly become a focal point for the Galician side, who sit seventh following promotion.

The Gabon forward is 37.
