Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg rejects Newcastle United move | OneFootball

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s proposed move from Marseille to Newcastle United is off, according to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano.

Hojberg was reportedly close to joining Newcastle, with the Tyneside club prepared to meet Marseille’s asking price for the Denmark midfielder.

The 31-year-old has now rejected the Magpies’ approach, ending negotiations over a potential switch.

Hojberg could be holding out for a bigger move, with Italian giants Inter Milan and AC Milan also reportedly interested in the former Tottenham Hotspur star.

Hojbjerg is the latest player to turn down a move to Newcastle this summer. Victor Munoz and Johan Manzambi also rejected their approaches before joining Liverpool and Aston Villa respectively.

He would have been a good addition to Newcastle, who are looking to strengthen their midfield following the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle have signed Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba to bolster their midfield options, but they appear to be aiming to add experience to that department, hence their interest in Hojbjerg.

They have also been linked with Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha, but face competition from Aston Villa for the Portugal international.

Newcastle’s new head coach, Matthias Jaissle, prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation. He could push for the addition of another midfielder, particularly if Joelinton also leaves the club.

Bamba and Joe Willock played in the double pivot in the 2-1 friendly win over Valencia. The duo failed to impress, further strengthening the case for injecting more quality into their midfield.

Newcastle face Everton, Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg in their final warm-up games before their opening Premier League match against Liverpool at St.James’ Park on August 23.
