Pierre Sage’s impending departure has upended Lens’s summer plans, leaving sporting director Jean-Louis Leca facing a frantic rebuild and a swift search for a new head coach.
According to L'Équipe, Leca recently turned down an approach to become Marseille’s sporting director, a move that would have paid more than five times his Lens salary. He informed chief executive Benjamin Parrot and was given time to reflect, then declined 48 hours later, convinced he had more to do at Lens.
Leca has been left irritated by how Sage prepared his exit, even if he appears to understand the 47-year-old’s wish to test himself in the Premier League and quadruple his pay. A media round launched minutes after the Coupe de France triumph was viewed as a breach of their moral pact. The talks to formalise the split were cold, and Sage first replied by late-night message on Monday to meet a club deadline.
Only last month Sage spoke of close alignment with Leca on squad planning. He had been deeply involved in the market strategy, even speaking directly to targets. Without him, several of those players could reconsider, forcing Leca to redraw the roadmap.
Leca’s first summer in the role was near flawless for smart buys and the owner Joseph Oughourlian’s desired trimming. He has secured former captain Yannick Cahuzac for the staff, reportedly validated by Sage last summer and again in winter, but never planned to make him number one. Cahuzac will take his BEPF in 2026-2027, which brings nearly three months’ absence, and Lens will be in the Champions League.
Olivier Pantaloni, 59, Patrick Videira, 49, and Alexandre Dujeux, 50, are among names under consideration, and Leca left Corsica on Thursday to accelerate talks.
Lens aim for at least €40m in sales this summer and will not change their wage policy despite a Champions League return. The signing of Saud Abdulhamid until 2029, announced on Thursday, is an early positive, but a long summer lies ahead.
