Gerard Piqué’s Kings League has begun a collective redundancy process, announced two days before talks start. Workers say 41 of 83 roles in Kings Competition and Kings Spain are being cut, almost half, after the company initially put the impact at 30%.
According to 2Playbook, the company employs 230 people worldwide and revenue topped €40m in 2024, with 2025-2026 growth of 35% year on year to €66m.
The Barcelona firm says the plan covers 41 cuts out of 125 roles, though the measure is being executed in Kings Competition and Kings Spain, which together total 83. Staff add the measures will also end up affecting Kings League France and Kings League Germany.
The competition’s return in Spain has been delayed to 2027, a shift that has driven the drastic move. The company says it will pause activity for six months to review the model and prepare the product for the future. Employees question the plan, warning that without the qualified teams behind recent events that future may not be viable.
Staff say the ordeal began three weeks ago when the collective dismissal process was flagged to them. They say confidentiality was imposed, yet the company circulated what they view as a softened and unrealistic account. Employees estimate the savings from the cuts at just over €2m.
The high-profile seven-a-side competition is reshaping its structure as it reformulates its model. The next step is to redesign the product, taking cues from the Superliga and March Madness, with entry into the US in mind.
