Hull City boss Sergej Jakirovic has pushed the club to enter talks with Leeds United for Birmingham City and Wrexham target Joe Gelhardt, according to journalist Mike White.

The 24-year-old Leeds striker initially joined Hull City on loan during the winter of 2025 and in the summer, despite interest from Scottish giants Rangers, managed to sign him on a season-long loan.

Gelhardt played a key role in helping Hull City earn promotion to the Premier League and he managed to score 15 goals while laying on five assists in 42 games for them.

He returned to Leeds following the expiry of his loan spell and Jakirovic is keen to bring him back to the MKM Stadium this summer.

It was suggested the transfer fee for the Leeds star is not a problem for Hull but due to the ‘high salary’ he is receiving at Elland Road which the Tigers do not want to pay, they are looking at cheaper alternatives.

Gelhardt has suitors in the Championship as well, with Birmingham City manager Chris Davies being an admirer of the Leeds star’s talents.

Wrexham are also keen to add him to their lineup and it is understood that they are planning to offer £4.5m to the Yorkshire giants to secure his signature.

Now with Gelhardt in demand in the ongoing window, Hull have returned to the race and and it has been claimed that Jakirovic has pushed the club to get back in talks with Leeds.

Despite Jakirovic being keen on reuniting with his former disciple Gelhardt, the Hull City hierarchy have been doubtful about whether he will be able to make an impact in the Premier League.

Gelhardt is in the final year of his contract with Leeds and he is down the pecking order under Daniel Farke.

Leeds will be keen to cash in on him this summer and due to his impressive performances last season, they will be looking for a good fee.

Despite Birmingham City and Wrexham’s interest, Hull being in the Premier League and Gelhardt’s relationship with Jakirovic could give them an advantage in the race.
