Southampton were held 0-0 by Millwall in a drab New Year’s Day contest, with late chances spurned after the visitors nearly stole it.

According to Sainstmarching.com, Tonda Eckert made five changes, recalling Léo Scienza and starting Elias Jelert, Cameron Bragg, Kuryu Matsuki and Cameron Archer.

A flat first half produced few clear chances and home fans booed at the interval.

On 78 minutes, Thierno Ballo was denied by a spectacular point-blank stop from Gavin Bazunu, keeping Southampton level.

Deep into added time, Finn Azaz saw a close-range effort blocked, then Taylor Harwood-Bellis headed wide from a Ryan Manning corner.

Player ratings reflected the stalemate. Bazunu earned seven out of 10, while Bragg was player of the match with eight out of 10 for his composed midfield work.

Jelert and Manning struggled to impose themselves, Downes had only 38 touches, and Archer’s movement brought little service.

From the bench, Tom Fellows was lively at eight out of 10, Adam Armstrong looked dangerous and created Azaz’s chance, and Jay Robinson offered intent. Scienza was withdrawn at half-time, while Azaz’s late miss capped a sluggish afternoon.
