PSG have provisionally clawed back to the top of Ligue 1 before Marseille’s away game at Lens tonight. Achraf Hakimi opened his Ligue 1 account this season with a neat brace and Désiré Doué made it three in the dying seconds.

The Match

On the back of their dominant away Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen (2-7), PSG intended to return to winning ways in Ligue 1 after consecutive draws against Lille and Strasbourg. Although they secured possession and territorial supremacy in the opening exchanges, Les Parisiens struggled to approach Radosław Majecki’s goal.

On their behalf, Brest more than held their own, most notably through their punchy winger Pathé Mboup, but it was clear that it was a matter of time until PSG got their opener. Senny Mayulu first called Majecki into action until PSG’s best-in-class took matters into their own hands.

Vitinha, who was brilliant on Tuesday in Germany, delivered the goods again before the half-hour mark with a beautiful lofted pass towards Achraf Hakimi. The Moroccan right-back found Majecki’s bottom right corner on the volley. Hakimi secured a brace before half-time, this time following a neatly taken one-two with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

Minutes into the second half, Brest would squander a glorious chance to halve the deficit. Lee Kang-in handballed Romain Del Castillo’s back-heel and, despite a lengthy VAR review, the hosts were awarded a penalty. The former Lyon and Rennes winger stepped up, but he awkwardly lost his footing and skied his attempt.

From then on, Brest’s confidence appeared shot to bits and PSG were more than happy to circulate the ball with ease. Khvicha Kvaratskelia missed the opportunity to put the game to bed and Luis Enrique could rotate his squad. Ousmane Dembélé and Marquinhos notably made their Ligue 1 return after a spell on the sidelines. Désiré Doué entered the fray too. The winger rattled the post with a cross, but he finally made his mark on the game with a composed finish in the dying seconds.

In the end, moments of individual brilliance were enough for PSG to see off a spirited but ultimately limited Brest side that didn’t take its chances. Before Marseille’s away game to Lens tonight, PSG go top of Ligue 1, a familiar setting for Les Parisiens.

PSG player ratings

Lucas Chevalier – 6

Lucas Hernandez – 5

Willian Pacho – 4

Illia Zabarnyi – 6

The Ukrainian centre-back had a rough patch recently with a disappointing performance against Strasbourg and a horrendous showing against Bayer Leverkusen. Today, he was tasked with dealing with the physical threat of Ludovic Ajorque, and the Frenchman barely had a sniff.

Achraf Hakimi – 7

Booked early on for a tug on Pathé Mboup, the Moroccan felt frustrated at first, as shown by his anger for not being awarded a penalty when Junior Diaz looked to have handled his cross. But the Moroccan is a different breed. In his natural advanced position, the tireless right-back opened his Ligue 1 account with a quick-fire brace. Luis Enrique said he was the best right-back in the world, and Hakimi did his reputation no wrong.

Warren Zaïre-Emery – 6

Vitinha – 7

Lee Kang-in – 3

The South Korean international was given a spot in midfield in the absence of João Neves and Fabian Ruiz. The Portuguese prodigy and the Spanish controller can rest easy. Lee Kang-in had close to no influence in going forward and he cost his side a penalty in the second half. Hooked at the hour mark for Ousmane Dembélé.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – 5

Senny Mayulu – 5

Bradley Barcola – 4
