The Match

The turf at the Gamla Ullevi was far from what this iteration of Strasbourg have become used to playing on. Pitted and gnarled, with a giant square at either goal where fresh grass had been laid. It looked almost like a battlefield, which was apt for a Häcken side who looked to go toe-to-toe with their far richer opposition and more fancied opposition.

Häcken pressed from the front, looking to unsettle Le Racing’s build-up play. It didn’t quite work as intended, as Strasbourg seemed only delayed as they controlled the ball and took their time to play around the first line of engagement. Still, the hosts defended resolutely and offered up few chances of note in the first half.

Sam Amo-Ameyaw had a jinky run where he cut in from the right wing, darting past tackles before setting Rafael Luís up for the shot. The midfielder sliced at the ball, and his effort spun over the bar for a goal kick. The best chance would come in the 21st minute when Martial Godo served Julio Enciso an excellent cross. The former Brighton & Hove Albion headed home from close range to give Strasbourg the lead.

It had been an uninspired half, so it was no surprise that Liam Rosenior looked to his bench at the half-time break. Guela Doué, Diego Moreira, and Kendry Páez replaced Ben Chilwell, Lucas Høgsberg, and Enciso. The game sparked into life in a short burst when Moreira found Amo-Ameyaw at the far post. The winger touched the ball across the goal to Godo. Godo miscued his first attempt, but he was given another bite of the cherry and finished neatly.

Häcken responded from kick-off, as Mike Penders got stuck in no man’s land. John Paul Dembe got a fortunate touch to take the ball around the goalkeeper, where he could finish into the open net. The Swedes pressed for the equaliser; Emanuel Emegha was dispossessed just outside of his box, Mikkel Rygaard snapped at the chance, his shot just off the mark.

Strasbourg Player Ratings

Mike Penders, 5

He was certainly at fault for Häcken’s goal, but ultimately, he didn’t do much else wrong during the match. It felt more like a flash of inexperience, and he will likely learn from the error. He made several good saves to deny Häcken in the second half.

Ben Chilwell, 5

Replaced at half-time by Diego Moreira (6).

Ismaël Doukouré, 6

Andrew Omobamidele, 5

Lucas Høgsberg, 5

Replaced at half-time by Guela Doue (6).

Rafael Luís, 5

Mathis Amougou, 5

Martial Godo, 7

A good evening for the winger. He was directly involved in both of Strasbourg’s goals, assisting Julion Enciso for the first and then scoring the second. He’s been slowly staking a place in the first team since his summer move, and performances like this certainly don’t hurt his case.

Sebastian Nanasi, 4

Replaced by Emanuel Emegha in the 71st minute.

Julio Enciso, 5

A fine half from the former Brighton & Hove Albion man. He was the difference maker in the first half, when he got on the end of a chance that he really couldn’t have missed. He was likely rested at half-time due to his involvement in Sunday afternoon’s loss away to Stade Rennais. Replaced by Kendry Páez (5).

Sam Amo-Ameyaw, 6
