In Sunday’s early Serie A kickoff, Lazio weren’t able to trouble their visitors Napoli, who returned south with three valuable points in the bag.

The defending Italian champions took an early lead through former Roma man Leonardo Spinazzola, who tormented the Aquile on his return to the Stadio Olimpico. Amir Rrahmani then took advantage of a dubious free-kick to head home Napoli’s second, with Matteo Politano playing provider once more.

The second half didn’t witness any goals, but instead three red cards courtesy of Tijjani Noslin, Adam Marusic and Pasquale Mazzocchi. So, here are our player ratings for Lazio, who suffered a 0-2 defeat to Napoli in their first match of the year.

Lazio XI (4-3-3)

Ivan Provedel – 5.5

The shot-stopper had very little to do aside from picking the ball out of his net twice. Perhaps he could have done better on the opener, but the crowd in front of him was blocking his view.

Adam Marusic – 5

The Montenegrin veteran was having a decent shift compared to some of his teammates, but decided to end his game by starting a brawl with Mazzocchi.

Mario Gila – 6.5

The Spaniard was arguably Lazio’s best player in the contest, as he managed to limit the danger of the in-form Rasmus Hojlund.

Alessio Romagnoli – 6

The former Milan captain was solid at the back, as he helped Gila keep Hojlund in check.

Luca Pellegrini – 5.5

The left-back could have done with more support on his flank, as he was often struggling to contain the tricky David Neres and Matteo Politano in one-on-one situations. He failed to block the latter’s cross on the opener.

Matteo Guendouzi – 6

The Frenchman was the last Lazio player to raise the white flag. He almost dragged the team back to the contest with a late goal (perhaps his last for the club), but his header crashed against the bar.

Danilo Cataldi – 5

The Lazio stalwart has been outstanding recently, but this was probably his worst display this season. His misplaced pass culminated in Napoli’s opener, and he struggled to cope with the dynamic Eljif Elmas.

Toma Basic – 5.5

The Croatian started his game in his usual box-to-box role before going deeper following Cataldi’s exit, but he didn’t thrive in either position, putting on a bland display.

Matteo Cancellieri – 5

He created an early chance for Noslin, but that was the end of his positive contribution to the cause. He looked complacent at both ends of the pitch, especially when failing to track back on the opener, which left Spinazzola completely unmarked.

Tijjani Noslin – 4.5

The Dutchman ran hard but was hesitant to go for goal himself on a couple of occasions. He left his teammates with a man down by picking up a needless second yellow.

Mattia Zaccagni – 5

The Lazio captain’s poor form continues. Despite winning a couple of challenges against Giovanni Di Lorenzo, it was the latter who prevailed in the battle of skippers.

Substitutes

Manuel Lazzari – 5

His poor clearances almost gifted Napoli additional goals.

Reda Belahyane – 5.5

His introduction only consolidated the state of disarray in Lazio’s midfield.

Gustav Isaksen – 5.5

The Dane wasn’t able to get past the robust Juan Jesus.

Pedro – N/A
