The Match

Lucas Chevalier was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the opening 30 minutes. The PSG shot-stopper made two saves from volleys either side of a crunching challenge from Lamine Camara, for which the Monaco midfielder saw yellow. The first save came from Mohammed Salisu, but it was the save from Takumi Minamino, down low to his left, that was the more impressive.

Salisu would go close again midway through the first half, striking the outside of the post with a header from a tight angle; Chevalier looked to have his angles covered.

And Salisu would even have the ball in the back of the net before the end of the half, but it wouldn’t stand, the offside flag cutting short the celebrations.

Two quickfire chances came PSG’s way early in the second half, the first for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, denied at a tight angle by Lukas Hradecky and Senny Mayulu, then glanced a header just wide of the Finland international’s post from the resulting corner.

But Les Monégasques got the goal that their first-half performance in particular merited. Aleksandr Golovin picked out Minamino with his cross, and the latter poked the ball past Chevalier. Les Parisiens were provided with some much-needed momentum when Thilo Kehrer was sent off in the 80th minute, but chances remained limited and so Monaco held on, bringing an end to a three-game losing streak in Ligue 1; PSG could yet lose top spot tonight.

Monaco player ratings

Lukas Hradecky – 5

Mohammed Salisu – 8

The Ghanaian has really picked up since Sébastien Pocognoli’s arrival on the touchline. He was dominant in both boxes, particularly the opposition box, with every ball falling to him. He also made two very crucial defensive interventions, one on Kvaratskhelia, when the Georgian looked to have got around the side of the Monaco defence, and then later to intercept a through ball that Joao Neves was about to gobble up.

Thilo Kehrer – 5

Vanderson – 5

Caio Henrique – 6

Jordan Teze – 5

Lamine Camara – 6

Aleskandr Golovin – 6

Takumi Minamino –  7

Maghnes Akliouche – 6

Folarin Balogun – 6

The USMNT forward may not have had many chances on the night, but he has really improved his overall game this season, and his hold-up play, distribution, and defensive work were all crucial for Les Monégasques.

PSG player ratings

Lucas Chevalier – 6

The France international was clumsily taken down early on by a senseless tackle from Lamine Camara, but he held on, despite Matvey Safonov warming up on the touchline. He showed he was fit enough with an excellent save to keep out Takumi Minamino’s powerful low volley. Strong in the air, steady with his distribution and not at fault for Minamino’s goal.

Lucas Hernandez – 4

Willian Pacho – 4

Marquinhos – 4

Warren Zaire-Emery – 4

With Achraf Hakimi out for weeks, the France international fills in at right-back and, so far, he has conducted admirably out of position. But he can’t escape the blame for Monaco’s goal in playing Alenksandr Golovin way onside, which allowed the Russian to assist Minamino.

Fabián Ruiz – 3

An uncharacteristic performance from the Spaniard, who struggled when pressed inside his own half, giving away possession cheaply and putting his defence under pressure. His usual range of passing was not on show, and his influence on proceedings was heavily stifled.

Vitinha – 4

Deservedly lauded as one of the best midfielders in the world on the back of his midweek hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur, the Portuguese had a quieter outing on the Riviera and failed to dictate play as he so often does. Booked out of frustration for handballing.

Joao Neves – 4

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – 5

Senny Mayulu – 4

The Academy product was tasked to lead the line, but he was easily handled by Monaco’s centre-backs. but we should not forget he’s a midfielder by trade, and he’s done his defensive part. Replaced after the hour mark by Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, who had no influence.

Lee Kang-in – 3
