Ligue 1 McDonald’s, Round 15, 07/12/25

OGC Nice hosted Angers SCO on matchday 15 with a shadow hanging over the club. Following Les Aiglons’ sixth consecutive defeat, a 3-1 loss to FC Lorient, the players were attacked by supporters as they returned from their trip to the north.

The Match

There was to be neither Terem Moffi nor Jérémie Boga in the squad after they were reportedly targeted with the brunt of the supporters’ abuse. However, their teammates would take to the pitch wearing shirts with their names on the back. From the moment they exited the tunnel, Nice were met with a wave of boos and whistles from their supporters, and that wouldn’t ease up until they left at the half-time.

The atmosphere, as far from what you might expect from a home crowd, unsettled the Nice players. There was a tension to the way Nice played, a sense of rushing their decisions, and it almost led to an early disaster when Sidiki Cherif narrowly missed a point-blank header in the second minute. Diop would almost quieten the discontent when two minutes later he blazed a shot over the bar.

Nice were far too open, and Angers pressed them aggressively, finding it easy to bomb into the box. It proved to be only a matter of time before they found the back of the net, capitalising on a mistake from Juma Bah (one of his many). Yassin Belkhdim intercepted the centre-back’s errant pass out from the back, a quick passing move saw Belkhdim slip into the box and touch home Carlens Arcus’s cross.

Nice would rally near the end of the half, but always looked as if they were one mistake from falling apart. Les Aiglons would continue to court disaster when Tom Louchet lashed out at Jacques Ekomié with a high studs-up challenge. It was a rash decision, and the midfielder was lucky to escape at first with a yellow. VAR would swiftly amend, and Nice would be down to ten men after a pitchside review.

Yehvann Diouf was forced into an excellent point-blank save by Ekomié, keeping his team in touching distance as they slowly began to show signs of life. Bernard Nguene and Morgan Sanson got into promising positions, but neither could pull the trigger to threaten Hervé Koffi.

With 15 minutes of the match left, Nice threw caution to the wind and pushed numbers forward. Koffi, who had a largely quiet afternoon, was called into action, saving shots from the substitutes Isak Jansson and Tanguy Ndombele. Angers responded, dropping into a deep shape that Nice could not break down for the remaining minutes.

OGC Nice Player Ratings

Yehvann Diouf, 6

A couple of mistakes with his passing in the first half, but he grew into the game. He had a couple of important saves that prevented Angers from taking a significant advantage, and allowed his team to have the belief up until the final minute that they could manage to rescue a point, even with the man disadvantage.

Melvin Bard, 4

Juma Bah, 2

The centre-back had another error-prone performance. He was easily beaten in challenges, outmuscled, and would make the wrong pass. He was at fault for the first goal, giving possession away just outside the box. For a player who looked so competent in the second half of last season with RC Lens, it almost feels as if Nice have been loaned a different player. He was replaced in the 46th minute by Bernard Nguene

Antoine Mendy, 3

Ali Al-Abdi, 5

Charles Vanhoutte, 5

Morgan Sanson, 3

Tom Louchet, 2

A masterclass on how to make a bad situation worse. The midfielder lashed out in frustration at Ekomié with a reckless studs-up tackle, which earned him a red card and left his teammates having to try and turn around the deficit with a numerical disadvantage for most of the second half.

Jonathan Clauss, 5

Sofiane Diop, 3

Mohamed-Ali Cho, 3
