The family of Leeds United supporter Michael “Mick” Hewitt, 65, are appealing for information after he went missing in Barcelona around 10 days ago.
“To see a family member, a picture that you’ve supplied, pop up on the telly as a missing person, it’s a hell of a blow,” said his brother Gary, speaking to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk.
His last known contact was a WhatsApp message to a friend in Leeds in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, sent from Barcelona. A beer-rating app shows him checking into a city bar on Saturday, June 20, with no trace since.
Mick had told family he was travelling to the US via a two-night stop in Barcelona to watch England face Ghana at the World Cup in Boston on June 23, though it is unknown if he ever boarded the flight from Spain.
“We just want someone to tell us whether he actually left Barcelona. Are we looking in the right country? Are we concentrating on the right part of the world? It’s this pretty serious nothingness that’s killing us.”
The family say only Interpol can access passport data to confirm any departure, and that progress has been slow despite calls to the consulate and the Foreign Office. Fans across football have shared appeals, and a missing persons report was logged with West Yorkshire Police on Sunday, June 28.
“Please just let us know that you’re safe. Everyone’s looking out for you.”
