Plenty of goals and a familiar face: Five key facts ahead of #B04RBL | OneFootball

After extending their winning run at home to seven straight league games, spanning multiple seasons, RB Leipzig are now looking to improve their form on the road. Standing in their way is a former Leipzig striker who has started the season in excellent form.

Here are five key facts ahead of Sunday’s away game at Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

1. Goals flowing for RBL

At first glance, RBL’s start to the season looks similar to last year, when they also picked up six points from the first three Bundesliga games. The big difference is in attack. RBL had scored three goals at this stage last season; this time around, they already have nine.

Only SC Freiburg have scored more often in the division (10), while FC Augsburg are also on nine. The only time the Red Bulls have scored more than nine goals in their opening three Bundesliga games was in 2023/24, when RBL found the net ten times.

Another encouraging sign is that the goals have been shared around. Three have already been scored by defenders, with Ridle Baku netting twice and Willi Orbán making it 3-0 against HSV last time out. Our experienced centre-back was understandably confident afterwards: “When we’ve got our strongest XI out on the pitch, we’re one hell of a team.”

2. Leverkusen’s main goal threat

In Patrik Schick, Bayer 04 have a striker who has made a flying start to the campaign. The Czechia international is the only Bundesliga player to have scored on all three matchdays so far this season.

His latest goal was particularly impressive. Schick rescued a point for the Werkself in the 89th minute of their 2-2 draw in Augsburg with a backheel that had a goal probability of just four percent.

Schick knows Leipzig well, of course. He spent the 2019/20 season on loan with the Red Bulls, scoring ten goals in 22 Bundesliga appearances.

3. Nusa delivering again

Antonio Nusa is taking on an increasingly important role in our attack. The Norway international registered four goals and three assists in the Bundesliga last season, and after just three games this term he already has two goals and two assists.

Toni was outstanding in the 5-0 win over HSV, contributing one goal and two assists. His three goal involvements were the most he has ever managed in a single Bundesliga game. “As an attacker, I try to help the team with goals and assists,” he said afterwards.

4. Consistently among the Bundesliga’s best

RBL and Bayer 04 have both established themselves near the top of the Bundesliga standings in recent years. Since RBL's promotion in 2016, the Red Bulls have finished in the top seven every season. Leverkusen came 12th in RBL's debut Bundesliga campaign in 2016/17, but have finished in the top six in every season since 2017/18.

The points totals tell a similar story. From the start of 2016/17 through to matchday 3 of 2026/27, RBL have collected 628 Bundesliga points. Only FC Bayern (802) and Borussia Dortmund (670) have taken more in that period, with Bayer 04 fourth on 605 points.

5. Improving our away form

The 5-0 win over Hamburger SV was RBL’s seventh consecutive Bundesliga home victory, equalling the club record set in 2016/17. A new best could follow when Eintracht Frankfurt visit on matchday 5.

First, though, the focus is on Leverkusen and improving our away form. RBL have lost each of their last three Bundesliga games on the road: 4-1 in Leverkusen and 4-1 in Freiburg at the end of last season, followed by the recent 3-1 defeat in Bremen.

RBL will be aiming to end that run at the BayArena on Sunday.
