FLW's Plymouth Argyle Fan Pundit was balanced in his assessment of summer signing Owen Oseni
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Owen Oseni's impressive performances for Plymouth Argyle aren't enough to decide whether the Pilgrims have "struck gold" with the striker yet, they've been told to wait a bit longer.
The 22-year-old arrived from St Mirren in the summer on a three-year-deal for an undisclosed fee, after only managing 11 substitute appearances for the Scottish top-flight side.
Argyle manager Tom Cleverley paired Oseni alongside Swiss forward Lorent Tolaj in a 3-5-2 formation against Burton Albion last Saturday, which proved very successful as both strikers found the net in the club's biggest away win since 2014.
This was only the Irishman's second league start of the season, as he failed to come off the bench in the previous two League One games beforehand - against Peterborough United and Stockport County respectively.
Speaking about Oseni's impact since joining Plymouth Argyle, FLW's Fan Pundit for the Devonshire club, Luke Hodge, remained measured when assessing the striker's contribution.
"At this moment in time I wouldn’t necessarily say we’ve struck gold with Owen Oseni - but that’s not to say that in sort of three or four months time then that could well be the case," Hodge explained.
In his first nine appearances for the Pilgrims across all competitions, Oseni has scored five goals, which, in Hodge's opinion has allowed the striker to force his way into the squad.
"He’s forced his way into the side, he’s scored some good goals and he played really well on Saturday and actually helped our main striker Tolaj to have a second sort of striker up there, so fair play to Owen Oseni," Hodge added.
"At 23-years-old, again - bags of potential, works hard, he’s improving all the time and he looks like he could be a star in the future so lets just hope that he continues to go from strength to strength and have a good run of games."
Hodge's cautious optimism extends beyond Oseni to other members of Plymouth's young squad - with 17-year-old Tegan Finn one other being name-dropped after contributing to four goals in the EFL Trophy against Tottenham's U21s.
"There is every potential that we’ve struck gold with him [Oseni] but at this moment in time it’s too early to tell. But, having said that, there are a lot of youngsters in this team that I'm quite excited about," Hodge told FLW.
"Obviously, you’ve got Tegan Finn at 17-years-old who looks like the real deal, Ibrahim in the middle of the park has been absolutely superb and there’s so many other players that are young and have bags of potential," he continued.
Bradley Ibrahim, who's two years younger than Oseni, joined from German side Hertha Berlin in the summer and has featured in every league game so far - the most out of all players mentioned.
Despite the promise shown by these individual players, Hodge acknowledged the inevitable inconsistency that comes with fielding such a youthful squad.
He said, "As we’ve shown last week, losing 1-0 at home to Peterborough, really poor performance, but then to go to Burton away - yes they’re struggling - to win 4-1 with our away record shows how good we can be one week to how poor we can be the next."
Allowing Posh to claim their first away win of the season was particularly disappointing for Plymouth fans, especially considering they'd just seen their team beat two other promotion hopefuls in Stockport and Luton Town before that.
The mixed results reflect Argyle's current position in the third tier, where they sit 15th with 12 points from their opening 10 matches. While this is obviously a somewhat disappointing start for a club with promotion hopes, Hodge thinks the foundations are there for future success.
"It’s exciting times for the club really, going from a transfer window where many fans, including myself, were a little bit sceptical. I’m now getting a little bit excited about what the future holds for this club, it’s just about consistency because as I’ve said it’s a very young side," the Fan Pundit concluded.
Ultimately, like Hodge believes, consistency will be the key to determining whether Plymouth can push on this season, and if they have indeed struck gold with Owen Oseni.
But given the ages of the Irish striker and the other youngsters mentioned in this piece, Cleverley has the time to build Plymouth into a really good side after a rough start to 25/26.
