Plymouth Argyle chief executive Paul Berne has moved to publicly back head coach Tom Cleverley in a post on X, insisting the former England international remains the right man to guide the club through a difficult start to the League One campaign.
Despite a third successive defeat, a 2-0 loss at Mansfield Town on Tuesday night, leaving the Pilgrims third from bottom, Berne has urged for stability and patience, reiterating his faith in Cleverley’s long-term vision.
“We are a quarter of the way into Tom’s first season with us,” Berne said. “Whilst results have been disappointing, nothing has changed in terms of Tom being the right person for this club. We need to bring stability throughout the club, and this comes from the Head Coach downwards. We are confident that things will improve.”
Cleverley, who took charge at Home Park in the summer following Plymouth’s relegation from the Championship, has overseen just four league wins from 14 games. However, the 35-year-old’s commitment to developing a youthful, energetic side continues to earn admiration within the club hierarchy.
