As we enter the final week of the transfer window, fans across the EFL are pitching who they want to see arrive at their club to give them a real boost as the season begins to work through the gears.

Down in Devon, Plymouth Argyle have been slow out of the traps in League One yet again, picking up just one point from two games, albeit against difficult opposition in Stockport County and Wycombe Wanderers.

The main question marks surrounding this Pilgrims side involve who will take the scoring mantle after Lorent Tolaj's departure to Bristol City. The Swissman led the line perfectly in his sole campaign at Home Park, scoring 17 in just 29 league appearances for Argyle.

It's only been two games, but that answer doesn't seem too clear just yet. Bim Pepple hasn't got his league account underway just yet, and while Will Evans did score against Wycombe, the £400,000 that they spent on the 29-year-old didn't excite too many Plymouth fans.

Tolaj himself was a late arrival in the summer transfer window last season, having already played the first four League One games for Port Vale before Argyle activated his release clause.

If a similar big-name signing was to arrive at Home Park in the latter stages of this window, FLW's Plymouth fan pundit, Luke Hodge, would love Exeter City frontman Jayden Wareham to make the move from their rivals.

"It's an easy one for me," he prefaced when asked which player he'd love Argyle to sign. "Jayden Wareham at rivals Exeter. I did an article over the summer explaining how much I rate him, and I do, very much so.

"I think he's got all the attributes of a top striker; he's confident, has elements of arrogance about him, which I think some strikers need. He leads the line very well, and he's good in the air too, for, albeit not a short lad, he's certainly not six foot two, six foot three.

"He's also an intelligent footballer, banged in 20 goals last season for a relegated side, and for me, he was the perfect Tolaj replacement. Not as good, but the same sort of player."

Wareham scored 22 goals in all competitions in his debut campaign at Exeter, 19 of which came in League One. Given the financial constraints which surround the Grecians as a fan-owned club, it's somewhat surprising that the 23-year-old hasn't been cashed in on just yet.

Hodge believes that the former Chelsea academy product could be worth on the lower end of the seven-figure scale, which, in his eyes, would be a low-risk deal.

"I think he's a low-risk transfer, because you'd probably pick him up for around £1.5 million," he continued. "The guy's going to score goals, and in 12 to 18 months, that could double."

Unfortunately, though, there are one too many barriers to the possibility of Wareham crossing enemy lines from Exeter to Plymouth. Not only due to the nature of that rivalry, but also the financial aspect, too.

Argyle were forecast to make losses of £10.6 million throughout last season. A lot of those losses have been covered by owner Simon Hallett, which would suggest why the cash hasn't been splashed as such on a Tolaj replacement.

"I totally understand that Argyle are in a situation where it would take a Bim Pepple sale for us to be talking about the potential of Wareham coming through the door," the fan pundit explained.

"Wycombe have had an offer refused, so that could still happen. Wareham himself may not want to come here because of the rivalry, and similarly, Exeter may be reluctant to sell him here because of that.

"So, there are many factors that could stop this from happening. It's very unlikely, but as a player, Wareham would be welcomed here at Argyle, hit the ground running and be a fantastic signing."

Ultimately, if Plymouth are unable to sign Wareham this summer, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Pepple showed last season that he can lead the line well, and Evans, if he can rectify his wasteful nature in front of goal from his final year at Mansfield Town, will chip in with around 12 to 15 this year, too.

With Owen Oseni in reserve and the likes of Xavier Amaechi, Caleb Watts and Oliver Irow around them, that's enough firepower at the top end of the pitch to help Tom Cleverley's side go one better than last year and finish in the play-offs.

However, adding Wareham not only would stop a play-off rival from benefiting from him up front, whether that's Wycombe or someone else, but it would also get one over on Exeter yet again after Watts' contract saga last summer, and it would push them back to being automatic promotion contenders, too.

If the pieces of the puzzle were all in place, it could possibly be one of the signings of the summer in League One, but time is running out for those pieces to be put together.
