Lazio supporters will be allowed to travel to Bologna for the Serie A opener at the Stadio Renato DallAra on Monday, 24 August, after local police dismissed talk of a ban.

In the previous 48 hours, reports had suggested fans from Rome and neighbouring regions would be barred from the trip. Il Messaggero reports that Bologna initially claimed the away end would be closed and Lazio-region fans prohibited, then removed that line after a police note on Monday afternoon, characterising the episode as an attempt to stir controversy and keep out 2,500 visiting supporters.

Organised Lazio supporters have refused season tickets this season, boycotting league fixtures in protest against president Claudio Lotito. Even so, they plan to follow the team in numbers away from home, as seen at friendlies in Ascoli and Frosinone.

The development means Gennaro Gattuso and his players can expect vocal backing on their first league outing.

By contrast, Lazio are set to host Mantova in the Coppa Italia this Sunday at a virtually empty Stadio Olimpico.
