Sunderland fans heading to Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby will be escorted from Newcastle Central Station to St James’ Park as part of a major safety operation. Thousands are expected to travel for the midday kick-off.

Newcastle City Council said in a statement the main police-supported escort will leave Central Station at 10.15am, mirroring December’s reverse fixture and expected to serve most away fans.

Late arrivals could face delays if extra escorts are needed and may miss kick-off, so fans are urged to reach Central Station before 10.15am. Inside, officers and event staff will guide supporters to a designated area. Official coaches go direct to the stadium.

Public transport will be very busy, with Metro and rail on a standard Sunday timetable. Allow extra time and expect queues. From Durham or Darlington there are no direct trains due to engineering works, with limited rail replacement services.

Drivers should note road closures around Central Station, St James Boulevard and Barrack Road to manage the arrival of away fans.

A significantly increased police presence will be in place across the city centre and at the ground, with plans aimed at minimising disruption. Planning has involved both clubs and regional partners including Northumbria Police, city councils, transport providers and emergency services.

There will be zero tolerance of disorder, with offenders facing prosecution and possible football banning orders. Extra officers will also patrol both city centres to help ensure a safe and enjoyable occasion.
