Le Progres reports that British police are investigating racist messages sent on social media at the weekend to four Premier League players, including Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana.
Fofana, a France international and former Saint-Étienne player, shared some of the abuse on Instagram after the 1-1 draw with Burnley, a game in which he was sent off.
He was likened to a monkey and told he should be put in a zoo by anonymous accounts. Hannibal Mejbri, his opponent, a Tunisia international born in France, was also targeted, as were Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle and Nigeria striker Tolu Arokodare of Wolverhampton on Sunday.
Mark Roberts of the UK Football Policing Unit said there is no place for racist abuse online or in person, and urged those hiding behind keyboards to think twice. He added that a dedicated team will work to identify offenders and bring them to justice.
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the racism suffered by the footballers odious. They said Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, will continue working to protect people from abuse, and ministers will hold it to account to ensure that happens.
