The UK Football Policing Unit has opened several investigations into four separate reports of racist abuse directed at Premier League players over the weekend, after Wolves striker Arokodare was among those targeted.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, Hannibal Mejbri of Burnley and Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana were abused on Saturday.
Following the targeting of Arokodare, it later emerged Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle had also received racist messages on social media.
Wolves and the striker issued a statement on Sunday condemning the abuse.
Chief constable Mark Roberts, who leads the UKFPU, said there is no place for racism online or offline and warned offenders they will be pursued. He added the unit will work to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer called the abuse abhorrent and said the government backs players who expose discrimination. They noted clubs want to work with social media firms, including Meta, alongside the Premier League and police to identify offenders. Meta has said it will continue working to protect people from abuse, and ministers will hold platforms to account.
