Porto celebrated in style as hundreds of thousands filled the streets to salute the new national champions from the Douro to the Aliados. The city’s main square was packed after a long, colourful and euphoric journey.
According to O Jogo, the squad embarked at Freixo for a river cruise along the banks of Gaia, soon after the trophy presentation at the Dragão. André Villas-Boas handed the silverware to captain Diogo Costa first, four years after their previous title.
At about 21:50 the boat crossed the Ponte Luiz I, prompting fireworks and a drone show. By the Serra do Pilar, lights honoured Jorge Costa and highlighted the club’s 87 trophies.
Villas-Boas danced among his players. Francesco Farioli said he was lost for words, noting he had been told about the Aliados but had not expected this.
At 22:26 the champions left the boat for the bus, tailed by the crowd up Mouzinho da Silveira. The Aliados were already full as the delegation crossed a long carpet to the Câmara Municipal shortly after 23:30.
Mayor Pedro Duarte called it a fair victory against many adversities, then received a commemorative shirt and a champions medal. Farioli and Diogo Costa lifted the trophy from the balcony as the party rolled on.
