Portsmouth have withdrawn from this weekend’s Subway Women’s League Cup tie at Charlton Athletic, the club have confirmed.

Pompey were due to visit The Valley on Sunday afternoon for their latest group stage fixture.

Portsmouth have reported that at least 13 first team players are unavailable for selection and the club therefore cannot fulfil the fixture. Pompey had requested a postponement, however, this request was denied earlier today and the club have now opted to pull out of the game. At this stage, it is unclear whether the game will be staged at a later date or whether Portsmouth will face any penalties for their decision. In recent seasons, some postponed games have not been replayed if they have been deemed to have little significance.

The cancellation is unlikely to have a significant impact on either side’s Subway Women’s League Cup hopes. Portsmouth have lost both group games so far and are set to be eliminated while Charlton Athletic also suffered a loss in their opening competition fixture. The two Barclays Women’s Super League sides are in the strongest positions to qualify, although only one team can advance to the quarter-final stage.

Further information regarding the cancellation of the fixture is expected to be provided in due course.
