Seleção coach Roberto Martínez has announced the 27-man squad he will be taking to Germany for the Nations League final four at the start of June.
Porto’s teenage sensation Rodrigo Mora has made the cut, although two other young players who have impressed this season, Sporting’s Geovany Quenda and Benfica’s Tomás Araújo miss out. Sporting midfielder Pedro Gonçalves has also been included.
“I’ve got a smile on my face when I talk about Rodrigo Mora,” said the Spaniard. “I think he is going to mark an era in Portuguese football.”
The attacking midfielder, who turned eighteen years old at the start of May, scored 10 goals and provided four assists in 23 Liga Portugal games for FC Porto in his debut season.
Pedro Gonçalves is back in the squad after missing most of 2024/25 because of injury. The Sporting forward ended the season on a high, scoring the opening goal in the final day 2-0 victory over Vitória that cliched the title for the Lions.
Given they played big roles in Sporting becoming champions of Portugal, centre-back Eduardo Quaresma and winger Quenda will feel unlucky to miss out, as will Benfica centre-back Tomás Araújo, although Martínez said the defender’s persistent fitness issue was behind his omission.
Portugal play Germany in the semi-final of the Nations League on 4 June in Munich, with France facing Spain in Stuttgart in the other semi.
The final and the 3rd/4th place match will be played on Sunday 8 June.
