Portuguesa have identified supporters responsible for racist abuse of Corinthians goalkeeper Hugo Souza at Estádio do Canindé after Sunday’s Campeonato Paulista quarter-final, and have referred the case to authorities.

The club said in a statement that those involved have been removed from the supporter membership programme and their identities will be forwarded to the relevant authorities. It added that it rejects all discrimination and is committed to a thorough investigation.

As Souza left the pitch for the dressing rooms after speaking to media and influencers, he was targeted with insults including “favelado” and “piolhento”, and told to cut his hair and called toothless. The abuse came from at least two home fans after the final whistle.

Despite the presence of the Military Police, the insults continued until another supporter intervened and urged an end to the abuse. The episode ended when Souza entered the tunnel, and as it occurred post-match it was not recorded in referee Raphael Claus’s report.

On Monday, Souza received public support. Corinthians pressed the Federação Paulista de Futebol for a response during the Paulistão semi-final technical council meeting, and the federation also made a public statement.

With legal proceedings under way, the goalkeeper and Timão now turn to Cruzeiro on Wednesday at 20:00 at Mineirão in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
