Portuguesa have called a board meeting to identify supporters who racially abused Corinthians goalkeeper Hugo Souza after Sunday’s game at Estádio do Canindé. The club also expressed solidarity with the player.

The club said in a statement that it rejects racism and any prejudice, adding that directors would discuss identifying those responsible and a possible sanction if any are members.

As he left the pitch for the dressing rooms after interviews and meeting influencers, at least two home fans shouted insults including “favelado”, “piolhento”, “corta esse cabelo” and “sem dente”.

Despite a police presence, the abuse continued until another supporter intervened and urged it to stop. The episode ended only when Hugo entered the tunnel, and it was not recorded in the match report as referee Raphael Claus had already departed.

On the pitch, it finished 1-1 in normal time. In the first half Hugo saved a penalty from Renê Santos before Zé Vitor put the hosts ahead.

Deep into stoppage time, Vitinho controlled Matheuzinho’s cross, beat Zé Vitor and found the top corner to force penalties. After nine kicks each, Corinthians won 8-7, with Hugo saving from Renê again and then Cauari.

The result sets up a semi-final against Novorizontino at Estádio Jorge Ismael de Biasi in Novo Horizonte. Palmeiras and São Paulo will contest the other place in the final.
