Sheffield Wednesday have received some positive on-pitch news as heartwarming footage emerges from the Steel City...

It has been a 2025/26 EFL Championship campaign of nightmares for League One-bound Sheffield Wednesday - but now, at last, some veils of positivity are beginning to emerge at Hillsborough.

The Owls headed into the season in crisis following a chaotic summer, which saw a series of prized assets and once-popular manager Danny Rohl depart the blue-and-white quarters of the Steel City amid numerous missed wage payments during the latter stages of Dejphon Chansiri's reign.

Wednesday's entrance to administration in October would see Chansiri finally leave the helm, although it incurred a 12-point deduction from the EFL to all-but certify relegation to League One for Henrik Pedersen's beleaguered side.

A further six points were deducted in December owing to the aforementioned failures to pay playing and non-playing staff, and Wednesday agonisingly saw relegation confirmed last month when they lost 2-1 away at Steel City rivals Sheffield United.

The current season has been nothing short of ruinous both on and off-the-pitch for Wednesday, who remain on -6 points after winning just once all term, although renewed excitement and optimism has been generated around Hillsborough as US businessman David Storch edges closer to a long-awaited takeover of the crisis-stricken Owls.

It's been considerably rarer for Wednesdayites to receive a positive on-pitch update in recent times, then, with supporters simply trying to make it to the end of a season which was always redundant and marred by crises of the past.

However, that's exactly what's happened in a new emerging development in S6 as a key player gears up for a return to action.

Sheffield Wednesday reveal positive Di'Shon Bernard update

The player in questionis Di'Shon Bernard, who remains a popular figure among Wednesdayites but is yet to kick a ball in anger this season after sustaining a serious knee injury in his side's 2-1 defeat at West Bromwich Albion all the way back in February of last year.

Then-manager Rohl confirmed at the time that it was a season-ending injury which would require surgery, and further setbacks have meant that Bernard has not been able to get back onto the pitch more than twelve months on.

The 25-year-old's absence has been sorely felt following two impressive seasons in the Championship with Wednesday, who have been plagued by an extremely thin squad all season and would have loved to call upon the experience and quality of the Manchester United academy product.

Pedersen recently left the door open for Bernard to return to action before the season is up, and that possibility now looks more likely through emerging footage of the defender being put through his paces and beaming with a smile during training.

The video, which was posted via Wednesday's official X channel on Tuesday afternoon, showed Bernard looking fit, sharp and in positive spirits as he bonded and laughed with teammates in a heartwarming moment for all affiliated with the Owls.

Exactly when Bernard will take to the pitch again would have to hang in the balance at this moment in time, although it's clear for all to see that he's not too far out from a return and that will offer a huge boost for Wednesday moving forward.

Bernard also spoke to Wednesday's media team, where he outlined his positivity at edging closer towards getting back on the pitch before declaring that "the finish line is near."

He explained: "It's been a minute. The sun's out and it's nice to get the legs going again, hopefully we can kick on from here.

"It's been hard. All the lads know, they see me in the gym everyday working, but it lifts me up seeing everyone happy for me being outside.

"It gives me another energy boost to keep going and the finish line is near."

Di'Shon Bernard can have a massive Sheffield Wednesday impact in League One

Although Wednesdayites would not be surprised to see further exits this summer following relegation to League One - albeit not to the same scale of last year's mass exodus - Bernard is among those who supporters may be most hopeful of retaining after missing so much action.

That could play into Wednesday's hands heading into the third-tier, where Bernard could orchestrate a leading influence as the side bid to steady the ship on and away from the field before looking to progress back to the Championship.

The 19-cap Jamaican international has shown himself to be a solid performer at second-tier level and can be a big part of Wednesday's future if he decides to remain with the club, while the fact a further year remains on his contract also helps out the Owls.

It will be hoped, then, that he can get some minutes under his belt in the dying embers of the current term before starting afresh come August and re-establishing himself as a star force in the Owls backline.
