Premier League and EFL clubs ‘seeking answers’ over regulator costs

Premier League and EFL clubs have grown increasingly unhappy about the cost of the Independent Football Regulator and what they might be asked to pay.

According to The Guardian, clubs have repeatedly sought clarity on the regulator’s operating budget and are frustrated by limited responses.

Concerns are understood to include the IFR’s appointment of US firm Boston Consulting Group, while clubs do not welcome an additional financial burden through a levy.

The regulator is currently funded by the government, but central funding is due to end at the start of the 27/28 season. A levy would then be raised from 116 clubs across the top five men’s leagues, from the Premier League to the National League.

The form of that levy has not been set. There are claims Premier League clubs would shoulder most of the bill, although how that would work remains unclear.

A public consultation is planned this year, with the regulator set to consider each club’s circumstances.
