Manchester City’s financial case could extend beyond the club’s eventual punishment, with rival Premier League sides seeking legal advice over whether they can pursue compensation following the independent panel’s verdict.

An independent commission has reportedly found City guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought by the Premier League, although the club maintains that the process is still ongoing and is expected to appeal. No sanctions have yet been imposed.

The potential for compensation claims adds another layer to a case that has already taken more than three years since City were formally charged in February 2023.

Several Premier League clubs had already sought legal advice before Friday’s verdict on whether they could claim they were financially disadvantaged by City’s alleged breaches. The BBC cites sources indicating that individual clubs could pursue their own claims, while another legal view suggested the process could be coordinated by the league.

The possible claims could centre on clubs arguing that City’s alleged financial breaches affected their own sporting or commercial outcomes — including European qualification, league position or relegation.

A similar issue has already emerged elsewhere in the Premier League. Everton were ordered in June to pay Burnley £35m after Burnley argued that Everton’s breach of profit and sustainability rules contributed to their relegation and associated financial losses. Everton have appealed that ruling.

The City case, however, would operate on a far larger scale if rival clubs ultimately pursue compensation.

The independent panel’s decision has not yet been formally published by the Premier League. Club executives were reportedly informed of the outcome at Thursday’s shareholders’ meeting, with some required to sign non-disclosure agreements before accessing the decision.

The verdict itself does not determine City’s punishment. A separate sanctions process will have to establish the consequences, which could include a points deduction, a fine or other sporting sanctions. The possibility of a points deduction severe enough to threaten City with relegation has also been raised.

City have denied wrongdoing throughout the case and have indicated that their legal process remains unfinished.

In a statement, the club said the Premier League process remained ongoing and that “significant elements” were still to be completed, while stressing its expectation that the league had acted as an “independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator”.

Any appeal could prolong the uncertainty, potentially leaving both City and their Premier League rivals waiting months for clarity over the final sporting and financial consequences.
