Premier League commits to football-led solution amid £1.5bn EFL proposal and backstop warning | OneFootball

The Premier League said in a statement that discussions with the EFL continued at a shareholders' meeting and it remains committed to a football-led solution to deliver extra money to EFL clubs this season.

Triggering the Independent Football Regulator backstop could leave clubs, including Wrexham, Swansea City, Cardiff City and Newport County, waiting one to two years for a new settlement, with the outcome difficult to predict.

The top-flight's New Deal offer was tabled last month, backed by Premier League clubs in July, and presented to all 72 EFL sides last week. Documents set out an increase in solidarity payments of more than £1.5bn over the next decade compared with current arrangements.

The proposal features a five per cent reduction in parachute payments over six years and changes to EFL cost controls.

It would require clubs to allocate 15 per cent of solidarity funding to infrastructure and create a £20m lifeboat fund for sides entering administration.

The plan also envisages closer alignment on the Saturday 3pm blackout, the Carabao Cup structure and the EFL Trophy format, which has a new five-year title sponsor in Jersey Mike's. The regulator's State of the Game review is expected next month. EFL clubs are due to meet again within the next fortnight to continue talks.
