Premier League clubs on Thursday unanimously agreed to keep the £30 cap on away tickets for the next two seasons, extending it until summer 2028. The move benefits travelling supporters, including those of Sunderland.

The cap, introduced in 2016, ensures visiting fans pay no more than a set price on the road. The league said away fans help create its renowned atmosphere, and that away attendances have risen from 82 per cent to 91 per cent since the cap began. It added that clubs recognise the extra costs of travelling.

Football Supporters' Association chair Tom Greatrex welcomed the decision, calling the cap an FSA idea made possible by members' campaigning. He credited the league and clubs for retaining it across 12 seasons and said it has saved fans millions over 12 years. He also urged owners to heed supporters' groups warning that home prices are often unaffordable.

Separately, Sunderland said this week that some tickets for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle United were returned to sale after what it described as a large-scale breach of ticketing rules.

The club re-released 65 tickets at 12pm on Tuesday following action against a supporter who misused an away allocation, cancelling the affected seats. The tickets, for St James' Park, have since been resold.
