The Premier League said an investigation is under way after the Tyne-Wear derby was halted in the second half over alleged discriminatory abuse aimed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida, reiterating that racism has no place in the game.
Play was paused in line with the league’s on-field anti-discrimination protocol after a report from the crowd targeting Geertruida. The incident at St James’ Park will now be fully investigated.
On the pitch, Sunderland came from behind to win 2-1 at St James’ Park, completing a derby double over Newcastle United. Anthony Gordon gave the hosts an early lead.
Chemsdine Talbi equalised 12 minutes after the restart. Brian Brobbey then struck in the 90th minute to snatch victory.
Brobbey’s strike was his sixth of the season and only the team’s 10th Premier League goal away from home this season.
